Have fun seeing things differently

Shot by a washing machine drum.

How to have a little fun when anxious.

This is the inside of my washing machine drum, and follows inspiration from a project by the photographer Robert Götzfried. Never before, have I been so excited by a project that I immediately got up and looked inside my washing machine!

I’ve been living in the same street in Munich for 15 years..

I really couldn’t come up with something that caught the atmosphere of the place I wanted it to show. The only thing that hit me was a shot of the inside of a washing drum.

Robert’s beautiful project of the inside of washing machines in his local laundrette inspired me, not only for how we take everyday things for granted; without noticing their detail, but also how the atmosphere of a place can be represented by an object.

Taking this a stage further, if we want to want to change how we feel about a place, can we take an object, that perhaps we barely pay attention to, and use that to change how we feel?

Here is an example for going back to school. When asked for 5 thoughts about the school, number 5 was -

“The annoying school bell”.

It’s a white rectangular shape. ”It looks like a ceramic brick someone taped to the wall”. Ok, now we’re starting to have fun. What is a weird thing it could be taped with?

Elf spit was apparently unsuitable, so blue submarine oil was chosen. Who taped it? Evil martians who love ice-cream topped pizza. They used submarine oil instead of horse glue.

So now the annoying school bell is taped with martian submarine glue.

So here is an experiment,

a little challenge for your day,

a gentle flicker to understand reluctance, anxiety and

to have a fun moment of seeing things differently.

  • In a place which has a negative association find an object that you see without noticing.

  • How does this object represent this physical space? For example; the school, a laundrette, or your morning journey to work?

  • Then start to play.

  • Experience the joy of taking the object and seeing it differently. Playing with your imagination, bringing fun into this place, and looking at it in a way which is you.

  • Let this fun light the space.

You’ve got this!
